We love working with children, teens, and their families! With over 20 years of combined experience as therapists, we understand the challenges that children and adolescents face today. Furthermore, this experience is enhanced with 15 years teaching at the high school, middle school, and elementary school levels, involvement in multi-cultural church planting, pastoring, and youth directing in church settings, along with volunteer work at the Southwest Detention Center with the male and female adolescent units through a Prison Team ministry program. These experiences have given us a broader sense of understanding and empathy for some of the unique strengths, needs, difficulties, and challenging circumstances facing children, teens, and their parents today. We generally like to meet with the parent (or parents) first in order to obtain an overall parent perspective of what is occurring for their child or teen as well as personal circumstances, support systems, and challenges within the family system overall. Then, we strive to provide a safe and comfortable atmosphere in meeting with the child or teen where we can, together, begin to navigate and explore new and more positive directions for growth, personal understanding, and resolve in their own maturing process on the road to adulthood.
It has been said that the teen years are, at times, very difficult on the teenager and on the parents of the teenager as well! Learn effective tools, theories, interventions, teen/parent contracting, and more to be able to navigate this very challenging developmental stage within the life of a teenager and within the family during these complicated times
Addressing such issues as:
New and recent complications involving social media and the web: Facebook, My Space, Twitter, Skype, texting, and more
Divorce: grief, decisions, transitions, and conflicted feelings for the teen (Note: Teens often "act out" stress, grief, depression, and loss in significantly different ways as compared with adults in similar circumstances)
Peer pressure
The teen "party scene:" temptations and realities
Personal identity issues: hormonal changes and effects on internal feelings and self-esteem
Eating disorders
Dating/Courting and break-ups: Understanding romantic relationships (within healthy and safe boundaries)
Overall financial stress of family complications for teens: college, military, school, working, "surviving," and future personal plans
Blended/blending family interpersonal relationships
Roles within sibling systems (relating with younger and older siblings)
Understanding of the teen's personal role and needed contributions within the family: homework, home chores, cell phone/electronics usage, curfew, overall family interpersonal atmosphere
Development of peaceful and workable interpersonal relationships within the family (understanding the positive impact of strengths, kindness, dignity, respect, warmth, nurture and love)
Addressing some of the following issues and more (Depending upon the unique challenges and strengths for each child):
Separation anxiety
Difficulties going to bed
Challenges at school
Divorce - Dealing with child's grief and loss (Note: A need for the awareness that children tend to "act out" grief, anxiety, and depression quite differently than how teens or adults would respond)
Interpersonal challenges within the family (with older and with younger siblings) and with parents
Family contributions on the part of the child: homework, home chores, home atmosphere, and more
First time obedience
Post-divorce: "blended" and "blending" family challenges (children trying to cope and find their own "safe place" within new settings and during transitions)
The painful and traumatizing experience of "bullying" within different settings
The development of respect, dignity, kindness, warmth, acceptance, and love interpersonally between children and those within their lives
Understanding the deep feelings of children in areas of self-esteem, personal identification, and stages of development
The role of significant support systems for children in the areas of academics, sports, lessons, enrichment activities, tutoring, schooling method, choices, church and community sponsored children's activities, and more...
We would be happy to speak to you about the challenges you may be facing with your teenagers or children. We understand some issues can add significant stress to the family! Please to not hesitate to contact us with your questions so, together, we can create solutions that would be helpful and beneficial for your whole family! Listed below are some of the common topics we explore when working with teens and children.
